Nearly 100 years after Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves, Laser Interferometer and Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) astounded the world by successfully detecting these waves. Detection was made possible by the advancement of laser technology and data processing techniques. Being able to distinguish the gravitational waves from the background noise was key to verifying Einstein’s theory.

This presentation features:
– The fascinating science behind the LIGO detectors
– The basics of gravitational waves
– LIGO’s organizational structure, and what the future holds for LIGO
– The data processing techniques employed by LIGO that enabled gravitational wave detection
